Roof Strapping Tip

Why do some roofers use 1×4 or 2×4 strapping underneath a steel roof and some don’t?

Strapping should be used under any steel panel that relies on exposed fasteners to hold it in place.

Some steel profiles, such as snap seam or standing seam, conceal all the fasteners that hold the panel down, so there is no risk of the fastener loosening off over time. Even if it does loosen off a little bit, it’s not going to cause any problems. However, exposed fastener panels such as the common tough-rib panel used exposed screws with neoprene washers under the heads to seal the holes.

If these screws loosen off, the washer won’t seal the hole anymore. This is why it is important to make sure that the exposed screw goes into solid wood backing that won’t soften up and relax its hold on the screw as the seasons pass.
